After a couple of lean years (relatively speaking) Germany's "Mad" Marvin Rettenmaier was back to winning ways yesterday by winning the Seminole Hard Rock Poker Open $25.5k High Roller for $787,497 after defeating Dan Colman heads-up.
Rettenmaier enjoyed break-out years in 2011 and 2012 where he won over $3m in live tournaments, including two WPT titles, one of which was the $25k World Champs for $1.2m. Although he enjoyed decent success to the tune of $663k in 2013, the last couple of years have not served Rettenmaier so well. This win, however, puts him over $1.16m for 2016 and up $6.25m lifetime.
The final table was stacked with quality including not only Rettenmaier and Colman but also WSOP bracelet winners Barry Hutter and Nick Petrangelo, the recent $5m winner of the Super High Roller Bowl, Rainer Kempe and WPT champ Andjelko Andrejevic.
Rettenmaier stayed out of trouble for much of the final table, avoiding big confrontations sitting 6th out of 9 when the table began. After the first few knockouts "Mad" Marvin started to make some moves, but was still content to leave the hard work to the others.
Eventually play was down to three with Rettenmaier and Colman actually scrapping it out for 2nd and 3rd place while Ray Qartomy was sitting pretty with over 60% of the chips in play after knocking out for of the previous six competitors at the final table.
However, the experience of former Big One for One Drop winner began to show as he started to take chips left and right from Qartomy to take over the chip lead. Eventually Qartomy had to settle for third place and a $291k payday in one the cruellest ways possible, running KK into Rettenmaier's AA.
Despite starting heads-up at a slight disadvantage to Colman, by the time the final hand came, Rettenmaier had established a dominant 3-1 chip lead over his American opponent. It still took a big dollop of luck to put the tournament to bed however, as Colman called Rettenmaier's button shove with the pair turning over Ks 9s and Jd 9d respectively. Despite Colman starting with the dominant hand, three diamonds on the flop pretty much sealed the deal. A King on the flop gave Colman some runner-runner outs but the Jc on the turn left him drawing dead.
Colman added $485,625 to his impressive live tournament figures - taking him over the $26m mark putting him 4th on the all-time live tourney money winners list behind Daniel Negreanu, Erik Seidel, and Antonio Esfandiari.
