While we may not be seeing too much in the way of super high-stakes games online these days, Daniel Negreanu's recent exploits at the Bellagio certainly seem to suggest that huge poker games are still very much alive and well.
In the blog, posted yesterday, Negreanu talks about how a big game in Vegas, which hadn't broken in at least five days, was quite nostalgic for him as it featured the likes of Phil Ivey, Gus Hansen, Jennifer Harman, Doyle Brunson, Patrik Antonius, and "with a little bit of new blood sprinkled in."
The games were played at $1500/$3000 (which was bumped up to $2k/$4k after midnight apparently) with an 11 game mix of Hold'em, Omaha 8, Razz, Stud, Stud 8, 2-7 Triple Draw, Pot Limit Omaha, No Limit Hold'em, 2-7 No Limit Single Draw, Badugi and 2-7 Razz.
Negreanu seemed pretty upbeat about the state of the games, saying that a game like that would usually attract a player pool of around 15 at any given time, but that it seems that there were 30+ players in town ready to play that high, which surprised him considering the WSOP wrapped up a month ago.
Negreanu goes on to reminisce about a big game in San Diego where he lost over $1m for the first time playing against the likes of Chip Reese, Doyle Brunson and Phil Ivey, remarking that Ivey had said to him "You hit beantown. First time you ever been stuck a big bean?" (a big bean meaning $1,000,000).
