Phil Ivey couldn't hold onto his overnight chip lead, busting in 6th place to the eventual winner of the Cali Cup, Fedor Holz
22 year old German tournament phenom Fedor "CrownUpGuy" Holz took down the first ever WPT $200k Super High Roller event, the "WPT Triton Cali Cup", topping a stacked field which drew 52 entries to secure the title and the huge £3,463,500 first place prize money.
At the end of the first day, the 40 players (with 12 rebuys) were down to 30, with 10 time WSOP winner and general poker boss Phil Ivey out in front. Ivey stayed there or thereabouts for much of day 2; in fact 6 of the top 8 players from the end of Day 1 ended up cashing at the final table.
It was certainly a final table packed with talent including Ivey, Holz, Steve O'Dwyer, Mike "Timex" McDonald, Daniel "mrGR33N13" Colman, David "dpeters17" Peters. In total the final 8 players had around $90m in live tournament winnings prior to this tournament (and a combined $100m after the tournament!)
Ivey's run came to an end courtesy of a bad beat from Holz after the two got into a pre-flop raising war which ended with Holz jamming for 1.15m and Ivey snap calling. Ivey's QQ was way ahead of Holz'z KQ but a lucky King on the flop kept Holz's tournament alive and left Ivey short. Just a few hands later Ivey's QJ lost out to Holz's AQ and Ivey was elimanted in 6th place, good for $656,500. Prior to Ivey's demise McDonald had fallen in 8th for $351,320, Phua in 7th for $401,600, and Colman in 6th for $502,000.
After picking up Ivey's chips, Holz took the lead and holed up at the top of the leaderboard until he ended up as a 2:1 chip leader when heads-up play began with US pro David "dpeters17" Peters.
It was a short one-on-one, lasting only four hands before the players got it all in pre-flop with Holz's 77 up against Peters AcQc. Peters was unable to connect with the board and Holz won the flip, the tournament, and the huge cash prize.
This is Holz's second seven-figure in in 3 weeks after he took down the recent Alpha 8 at the WPT Five DIiamond Classic in Las Vegas for just under $1.6m. Holz now has $7.3m in live tournament winnings, with the vast majority coming from Super High Rollers.
