With 746 players returning to day 4 of the main event and only 693 set to make the money, that meant there were going to be 53 very disappointed players leaving the room before the bubble burst. Unfortunately for Allen Cunningham, Huck Seed and Hasan Habib they had all busted by the time hand for hand play was introduced in the second level of the day.
A mercilessly brief bubble period was brought to an end when three players busted on the same hand, all in painful circumstances. Zhen Cai shoved his into , Kori Hunter got it all in pre-flop with against and lost, whilst perhaps the worst one of all saw John Dwyer get it in with on a board of . To his horror Mark Newhouse flipped over for quads and those three losing players all split one min cash between them.
Ronnie Bardah managed to avoid busting before the money, despite being one card away from elimination early in the day before ultimately winning a race to double up. That meant that he made history as the only player ever to record cashes in five consecutive main events, although his run came to an end later in the day for a 475th place finish.
The man behind Bardah’s IveyPoker sponsorship also busted soon afterwards, and despite two huge days to open with Phil Ivey is now out of the main event. The end came for him when he decided to re-raise all in holding with the board reading . Winner of event 25 this year John Kabbaj made the call with and when the fell on the river that was the last card Ivey would see this series.
By the end of the day 291 were left, safe in the knowledge that they were all guaranteed at least $33,734 and for one of them nearly three hundred times more than that. Selected stacks from day 4:
Matthew Haugen - chip leader 2,808,000 (281 BBs)
Griffin Benger 2,329,000
Dan Smith 2,229,000
Brian Hastings 2,079,000
Martin Jacobson 1,594,000
Play continues with day 5 on Saturday and some very high profile players returning to big stacks, which with any luck might result in a final table to look forward to later in the year.
