Jason Mercier Leads $50k Players Championship At WSOP 2014

Jason Mercier
Jordan Morgan heads up in event 44

It was scheduled for one bracelet to be awarded at the Rio on Monday (in event 44 $1,500 NLHE) but as we have seen several times already this series, the final two players decided to pause heads up play and return afresh to finish things off. After nearly six hours of play between just the two of them, there is still no sign of a clear favourite with Jordan Morgan (4,445,000) and Evan McNiff (4,170,000) looking like they might still go on for a while yet. When these two return on Tuesday, effective stacks will be 35 BBs with $478,102 awaiting the winner.

In event 45 ($1,000 NLHE) Angela Prada-Moed is in with a real chance of being the first lady to win a bracelet this series as she leads the final 12 players  going into day 3. She has 961,000 (80 BBs) with Loren Klein in second place with 804,000. They will be playing for $306,634 when this is decided on Tuesday.

Over in the $50,000 players’ championship (event 46) 58 players now remain after a day 2 which saw the demise of Gus Hansen, Daniel Negreanu, Phil Hellmuth and defending champion Matthew Ashton. Jason Mercier is the new chip leader, mostly thanks to a hand against Brian Rast in which the former champion of this event managed to ship 65 BBs by calling a 4 bet with {2-Spades}{3-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds} and then getting it all in on the flop with second pair and a gutshot.

Selected stacks going into day 3:

Jason Mercier               802,600

Jonathan Duhamel      783,000

Shaun Deeb                  724,400

Bertrand Grospellier    212,100

Phil Ivey                           158,000

This is a five day event so we’re not going to have a winner until Thursday but we’ll be back to check on the progress of those who still remain in tomorrow’s WSOP update.
