EPT Barcelona results in
After the WPT kicked off a new season earlier this month, the EPT has now followed suit with its opening event in Spain at Casino Barcelona. Just over a thousand players put up the €5,000 entry for the main event, making this one of the more sizeable prize pools that we have seen on the European tour. Notable players getting in amongst the chips in the early stages included John Juanda and Ilari Sahamies who ended day 2 in first and second places. Both were able to stay towards the top of the leaderboard all the way through to the day 6 final table where Sahamies started as chip leader. Juanda busted in 8th place in unfortunate circumstances when his pair was counterfeited by the board, but Sahamies remained strong throughout and found himself playing Mikalai Pobal heads up for the title. At that point the wheels came of though for Ziigmund when he 4 bet all in pre flop only to find that he had shoved into aces. Pobal's hand held up and it was he who collected the first prize of slightly over one million Euros.
A few days prior to the main event had been the by now customary super high rollers event with an eye watering buy in of €50,000. With rebuys. Not the sort of event you should probably bother buying into if you feel like you're running bad. Conversely, if you've had the boomswitch activated and you're feeling pretty invincible it might be exactly the sort of shot that seems rather appealing. Step forward the ideal candidate - Dan Smith of Las Vegas. In 2012 he has taken first in the A$100,000 buy in event at the Aussie Millions, first place in three different €5,000 side events at the EPT grand final in April and a third place in a $5,000 buy in event at this summer's WSOP. It should come as little surprise then that he also binked this one for a €962,925 addition to the bankroll, putting him on over $3.3 million worth of tournament cashes for the year. Quite the achievement.
Marafioti hires a heavy
Elsewhere in the world the WPT main event at the Bicycle Casino in Los Angeles is underway and it has managed to provide some cracking entertainment well before anybody got anywhere near the money. Matt ADZ124 Marafioti is someone who has managed to get his name in the news plenty in recent times, although generally it has been the sort of publicity that most sane people would want to steer well clear of. From allegations of multi-acounting and welching on deals to confessions of credit card theft and Twitter frenzies regarding the hairiness of Lauren Kling's anus, Marafioti has been making it hard to like him for some time now. The most recent allegation of all is that he has been part of a conspiracy to download malware to fellow players' computers which allows their hole cards to be seen remotely, then sitting against these players heads up and, somewhat unsurprisingly, managing to win large sums from them.
Whilst we should stress that so far there has been no concrete evidence linking him to these dastardly schemes, he has hardly presented a watertight case for the defence. Nor indeed even a slightly convincing one. Ham-fisted bordering on laughable would perhaps be more accurate, so it was no surprise that a few feathers were ruffled when he turned up to play the $3,500 event at the Bike. Amongst those making public their disapproval of Marafioti's recent actions had been Jonathan Aguiar, and it was he who incurred the wrath of the small Canadian on the card room floor. The WPT website reports that Bicycle security had to escort both players from the room during a break after Marafioti (safely flanked by a bodyguard he had brought with him to the tournament) starting shouting at Aguiar and shoving him. Despite heavy talk from some tournament officials about a possible ban, both were subsequently allowed to rejoin the tournament shortly afterwards. In amongst all the handbag waving there is actually a serious tournament taking place though and further updates will be brought to you here once we get them.

I applaud Matt for defending himself, and of course his reputation, because there's no need to deny false allegations.
